Choosing a size is the one decision many people hesitate over. Here is a simple guide to help you pick the canvas that suits your wall.
12″ x 16″: the intimate piece
Ideal for a bookshelf, desk, side table or a small wall in a hallway or bedroom. It is also a popular choice for gifts, as it fits easily in almost any home.
16″ x 20″: the most chosen size
The balanced choice for most homes. It holds its own on a living room wall, above a console table or in a reading nook, and it is large enough to show every detail of the portrait.
18″ x 24″: the statement piece
Best above a sofa, a fireplace or a bed. This is gallery scale, and it becomes the focal point of the room.
A simple rule of thumb
- Above furniture: choose a canvas roughly half to two thirds the width of the furniture beneath it.
- Hang at eye level: the centre of the canvas should sit about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
- Leave breathing room: keep 8 to 10 inches between the bottom of the canvas and the top of a sofa or table.
Not sure? Use painter's tape
Cut a piece of paper or mark a rectangle on the wall with painter's tape in each size. Live with it for a day and see which feels right.
